Aiming to promote the traditional culture of Cantonese Opera and to develop a new generation of actors for this special kind of traditional Chinese play, Wuzhou bureau of culture, press, publication, radio and television is to hold Cantonese Opera Culture Week in the city of Wuzhou with help from Guangdong and Macao organizations. The Culture Week will last from November 16th to 23rd, 2010, covering the activities of Cantonese Opera singing contest, live?shows of traditional Cantonese Opera plays, pictorial exhibition showing the 60 year history of Cantonese Opera Troupe of Wuzhou, and forum on the topic of culture exchange of Guangdong, Macao and Wuzhou.

What is Cantonese Opera?
Cantonese opera is one of the major categories in Chinese opera, originating in southern China's Cantonese culture. It is popular in Guangdong, Guangxi, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore and Malaysia. Like all versions of Chinese opera, it is a traditional Chinese art form, involving music, singing, martial arts, acrobatics, and acting. 粵劇 (Yuèjù) should not be confused with 越劇 (Yuèjù), the theatre of Zhejiang.
Cantonese Opera is the traditional opera of our country. It is a theme worthy of research so we can investigate its origins, history and change. It has been found that Cantonese Opera is composed of drama ( 戲曲 ) and art in different places of China. It is one of the largest drama classes in Guangdong( 廣東 ). The「Big Gong and Big Drum ( 大鑼大鼓 )」style is the characteristic of traditional Cantonese Opera beating music. Cantonese Opera started at the end of the Ming Dynasty( 明朝 ) and has a history of over three hundred years. During this period, it has undergone ups and downs that has made a great change to Cantonese Opera.
